At a glance

On March 15, 2022, the Coronado City Council approved Coronado's Climate Action Plan and directed staff to move forward with preparing a draft implementation plan. The Climate Action Plan outlines ways the City can reduce its greenhouse gas emissions within the City to support the state’s strategy. The plan documents current and ongoing sustainability efforts and provides a roadmap to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the future.

Coronado has a long history of implementing sustainability practices, including:

  • constructing green buildings
  • conserving water
  • developing a bike and pedestrian friendly community
  • and other environmentally friendly practices.

Reduction measures may include promoting rooftop solar installations and increased use of electric vehicles and charging stations.

Community Input

The community participated in the process by providing input online and at three public workshops focusing on how the community could reduce its carbon footprint. The implementation plan with recommendations, related costs and benefits is planned for presentation to the City Council in the summer of 2024. The City Council also asked staff to back information on Community Choice Aggregations, or CCA’s, which are entities that allow member cities to purchase cleaner sources of energy for residents and businesses inside the city limits.

    The City Council approved Coronado’s Final Climate Action Plan on Tuesday, March 15, and directed staff to move forward with preparing a draft implementation plan for review and approval. The Final Climate Action Plan can be found under the Documents tab on this page. The plan is aspirational and outlines ways the City can reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the City to support the state’s strategy. The plan documents current and ongoing sustainability efforts, and provides a roadmap to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the future. The Council asked staff to also bring back information on a program that permits cities, counties, and other authorized entities, to purchase and generate electricity for residents and businesses located within the boundaries of their jurisdiction. Coronado has a long history of implementing sustainability practices, including constructing green buildings, conserving water, developing a bike and pedestrian friendly community, along with other environmentally friendly practices. Reduction measures may include promoting rooftop solar installations, increased use of electric vehicles and charging stations, expanded or improved public transit and implementation of the City's Active Transportation Plan improvements. The community participated along the way by providing comments online or at any of three public workshops on how the community could reduce its carbon footprint. City staff aims to present a draft implementation plan with recommendations, related costs and benefits by this summer.

City staff is recommending that the City Council approve the Final Draft Climate Action Plan (CAP).     On Nov 4, 2021, the City conducted a virtual workshop to discuss the Public Review Draft Climate Action Plan. The workshop was well attended. A recording of the workshop is available below. The slide presentation also is available.

    Numerous questions and comments have been received, and the City will provide a response to questions and comments when it presents the finalized draft Climate Action Plan to the City Council for its consideration.


    The City released the draft Climate Action Plan for public review on September 7, 2021, and the public comment period closed on Friday, November 12, 2021. It is anticipated that the CAP will be reviewed at City Council for adoption the first quarter of 2022.

City staff is recommending that the City Council authorize staff to release the administrative draft Climate Action Plan (CAP) for a 60-day public review and comment period.     On Tuesday, March 16, an update on the Climate Action Plan was provided to the City Council to review potential greenhouse gas reduction targets and a menu of reduction measure options. Many of the draft measures came as a result of public comments made throughout the outreach process. See the survey results and ideas posted via live polling under the Documents tab.     A virtual, interactive public workshop was held Nov. 5 to get the community involved in creating a Climate Action Plan, which will provide an aspirational menu of community and municipal greenhouse gas reduction measures to achieve targets. The City has already completed its greenhouse gas emissions inventory, which shows where the City’s greenhouse gas emissions come from. A recording of the workshop has been posted for public viewing.
