Get To Know Your Library
The Coronado Library has over 220,000 items and is one of the busiest libraries in San Diego County. Learn how Library staff curates and arranges the collection to help meet the needs of all of our patrons.
Coronado Library Collection
The Library’s materials are acquired by City librarians from mainstream publishers. The selections are drawn from professional literary resources such as book reviews in reputable journals, sales metrics, and analysis of check-out trends.
Book acquisition recommendations are accepted by the Library. A patron can fill out a Purchase Suggestion Form on the Library’s website and the Library will consider making the purchase.
LIBRARY SECTIONS
The Library is divided into sections by age (Children, Teen and Adult/General areas).
Children's Section
The Children’s section is designated for ages 0 to 12. Library policy calls for children under the age of 8 to be accompanied by an adult. The Children’s Section, immediately adjacent to the lobby, contains board books for ages 0-3 (JUV BB), picture books for ages 3-6 (JUV E) and early readers books for ages 5-8 (JUV READ). In this section, shelving is low with multiple displays and outward facing book covers to encourage browsing and discovery.
In a separate room to the right of the Children’s Reference Desk, juvenile fiction chapter books for ages 6-12 (JUV FIC) and children’s non-fiction books for ages 6-12 (JUV NF) are located. These books are shelved in taller stacks above five feet with spines out. The non-fiction section houses books grouped by topic organized by the Dewey Decimal System.
Age Appropriateness of Children’s Materials
Following standard, professional convention, the Coronado Public Library uses the Library of Congress catalog of children and young adult books for age appropriateness. The Library Board of Trustees have adopted policies that address collection development and disposal and the process for review of complaints regarding Library materials.
Story Time
The Library offers three regular Story Times each week. On Monday, Baby Story Time is held for any age from birth to 2, on Tuesdays, Toddler Story Time is held for ages 2-4, and on Friday’s Preschool Story Time is for ages 3-6. Additionally, a bilingual Spanish-English Story Time is held on the first Wednesday of the month and other special story times are held periodically throughout the year. For each Story Time, the Librarian selects books from what is available on the shelves, in alignment with a theme. The City uses nationally recognized holidays, events, seasonal, and educational topics for its themes.
2023 Changes to Story Time Procedures
After concerns in the summer of 2023, Library staff implemented changes to its advance noticing for Story Time:
Advance Posting of Story Time Themes
On the Library’s online calendar, a listing of weekly themes was added to provide parents advance notice of the Story Time topic. The Library schedules and posts the Story Time themes one month at a time.Advance Selection and Display of Story Time Books
Book selections for the theme are often made the day of Story Time from the books available (books are not reserved and held back from borrowing). The Library places the books selected for the Story Time reading on a labeled display table, near the Reference Desk in the Children’s Section, about 15 minutes before the start of Story Time. This affords an opportunity for a parent to peruse the material.Review of Story Time Books
The Librarian selects age-appropriate books as classified by the Library of Congress, and then applies a further review of text and illustrations to pick the most suitable for a group reading for ages 2-6.
These changes were successfully implemented and have been well received by the public.
