ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Hometown Banner Program is a military service recognition program sponsored by the City of Coronado. Nominations are accepted on a continuing basis and the public is encouraged to nominate a deserving veteran -- living or deceased -- that has honorably served their country.

The Hometown Banner Program is an inspirational way for the Coronado community to honor the many men and women who have lived here during their military careers. In a town known for its military presence, Coronado has plenty of candidates.

The next ceremony is set for May 20, 2023.

NOMINATION ELIGIBILITY: Nominees for banners shall be past or present residents of Coronado -- living or deceased -- who served or are serving honorably in any branch of the US Armed Forced. For purposes of satisfying the residency requirement, an individual shall be considered a resident of Coronado if they presently reside or previously resided within the City limits of Coronado, including being stationed at Naval Base Coronado. Proof of military service may be documented in many ways, including, but not limited to, a copy of their DD Form 214, an individual's release from active duty record, or an individual's active duty record. Proof of prior or current residency shall be provided to the satisfaction of the selection Committee. Proof of residency may take many forms depending on available documentation.

For more information on the nomination process, please check online here or contact Andrea McCullough, Communications & Engagement Officer by phone at 619. 522.7340 or by email at amccullough@coronado.ca.us.

HOMETOWN BANNERS
Hometown Banners honoring Coronado veterans are displayed along Third and Fourth streets from Orange Avenue to Naval Air Station North Island, which has been officially designated as the Avenue of Heroes. Banners commemorating those selected for the honor are hung along the City’s designated Avenue of Heroes, Third and Fourth streets from Orange Avenue to Naval Air Station North Island. Those selected are honored with a reading of their biographies and a personal photo presentation at a special ceremony in front of family and friends. Banners are provided at no cost to the families or honorees once they are retired. Any active duty, veteran or retired service member who served honorably and lived or served in Coronado is eligible for recognition.

HOMETOWN BANNERS PAST PROGRAMS

November 5, 2022
The City of Coronado and the Hometown Banner Committee hosted a dedication ceremony on November 5, 2022, to honor the latest group of hometown military veterans or active-duty service members with banners along the Avenue of Heroes and a celebration of their service. Photos from the Hometown Heroes Ceremony honoring 12 locals who honorably served our country is here: https://www.coronado.ca.us/gallery.aspx?PID=835. Twelve “hometown heroes” who call or have called Coronado home were recognized and honored as part of the program’s 15th Group. Banners for the honorees are being displayed May through October 2023 along the “Coronado Avenue of Heroes,” which is on Third and Fourth streets from Orange Avenue to Naval Air Station North Island.

Officials with the City of Coronado, VFW Post 2422, the Third & Fourth Streets Neighborhood Association, and the Coronado Historical Association worked together to develop the Hometown Banner program, which honors men and women from Coronado.
