The City officially celebrated the completion of Phase One of the Tennis and Pickleball Court Resurfacing Project at Cays Park on June 5. The City project includes the resurfacing and restriping of tennis and pickleball courts at City facilities.
The project began well ahead of the construction start in April 2023 with months of engagement, a community survey, and meetings with the Coronado Tennis Association and Pickleball Coronado Association to understand the community's needs. The first phase began at Cays Park. To create more playing areas for the growing number of pickleball users, crews converted two existing tennis courts in Cays Park into dedicated pickleball courts, creating eight new pickleball courts. The first public pickleball courts in the city of Coronado.

The City contractor began work April 17 on Phase 1 at Cays Park Court 5 and the basketball court. During the footing excavation, the contractor found that the tennis court is made of post tensioned concrete. What this means is that in order to install the footings properly, the existing post tensioned cables within the concrete slab must be avoided. This caused a few days of delay to rework the footing sizes and locations.
Work completed to date:
- Pickleball net posts have been installed.
- Pickleball barrier fence posts have been dug. Concrete footings will be poured after a City inspection.
- Basketball court joints, primer, and green color coat have been completed.
Upcoming activities this week:
- Installation of pickleball fence and gates.
- Resurfacing and striping of pickleball court 5.
- Paint final blue color coat at free throw lane and circles on basketball court, followed by white striping.
Opening dates will be provided once the surfaces have cured.

As a result of the wet, cold weather the area has been experiencing lately, the City’s Court Resurfacing and Improvements Project has been slightly delayed. This project is important because the quality of play will be improved by refreshing the surfaces and restriping the City’s courts for tennis and pickleball. Because the material used in resurfacing is sensitive to moisture and temperature, the contractor must wait to apply the court surfaces in dry and warmer temperatures. Resurfacing a court is best done when the outside temperature is 50 degrees and rising for the duration of the surface installation. If the temperatures are too wet or cold, the surface won’t cure properly, and may lead to the surface cracking and additional repairs further down the line. Waiting for the correct temperatures will go a long way toward providing the best outcome for the community's courts.
The supplies and materials for the project have been delivered and the contractor anticipates work beginning in early April, barring weather-related issues.
